Karan Johar and Vijay Deverakonda Advocate for Unified Indian Cinema at WAVES 2025

At WAVES 2025, Karan Johar and Vijay Deverakonda emphasized the need to move beyond the Bollywood vs South cinema divide.

The filmmakers of Bollywood and South Indian films have had their fair share of Bollywood vs South Indian Film debates. In the first of its kind, the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai, both Karan Johar and Vijay Deverakonda expressed their views.

Johar was also quite animated as he pointed out how the media is divisive in thinking that an entire region of a country and languages speak in a parasitical tone of Hindi Cinema. They are South Indian films and referred to as South Indian films, so why treat them as inferior?  They are all Indian films.

Deverakonda agreed and focused on how such north north-south divide might make news, but it makes zero logical sense in the case of industry growth.

Can you imagine where cinema with soft power takes you? This goes exactly where the tabs you placed on your zips go. You may never know exactly where your attention goes, and instead of proving its existence proves to be the superior version.

Vijay agreed and said that the ‘South-North debate can be interesting for headlines but not very productive for cinema’. Giving an example of Pushpa 2: The Rule and Jawan, Vijay said the two regions can collaborate. “Shah Rukh sir’s last film did a ₹1000 crore film, and then Allu Arjun’s film did ₹1000 crore. So, just imagine if you bring them together in one film. When you bring the two stars from India, it will unite the country. The only ambition of any human is to get eyeballs and expand their reach. It is only possible through collaborations,” he added.

The session, ‘Cinema: The Soft Power’, had Karan as the moderator and Kareena Kapoor and Vijay Deverakonda as the speakers.
