Kajol’s Mythological Horror Film “Maa” Suffers Big Monday Drop

Kajol’s new horror-mythology film Maa had a promising start at the box office but suffered a sharp 72% drop

Kajol’s long-awaited return to screens in the horror drama Maa is off to a respectable start at the Indian box office. The film had its fair share of competition at the ticket counter, faced by a host of high-profile releases. Still, it was able to earn an estimated Rs 4.50 crore net collection on its opening day.

Directed by Vishal Furia, the supernatural thriller managed to hold its own despite having competition in the form of two high-profile releases, the Vishnu Manchu starrer Kannappa, and Brad Pitt’s racing drama F1.

Released on June 27, Maa marked Kajol’s comeback after being absent from films for three years and generated steady buzz among fans of horror and emotional dramas alike.

The film has a UA 16+ rating and a runtime of 2 hours and 15 minutes, combines Indian mythology with psychological horror, and follows a mother-daughter road trip that soon spirals into an unsettling confrontation with a cursed legend.

The film had a slow start to its collections, netting about 8.23% occupancy for its morning shows and increasing its numbers to just 32.61% for its night shows.

Maa, entering a cramped box office window certainly could have influenced ticket sales as well. Even with its competition and challenges, Kajol’s emotional role and the movie itself were admired. Plus support from Released on June 27, Maa marked Kajol’s return to cinema after her 3-year hiatus and helped create excitement among viewers who enjoy horror and emotional dramas.

This film currently has a UA 16+ rating, a duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes, fuses Indian mythology with psychological horror, and follows a mother and daughter on a road trip that takes a sudden wrong turn into the confrontation of a cursed legend.

The film did not have the best start to ticket sales, with occupancy for morning shows reflecting about 8.23% and still only raising numbers to about 32.61% for night shows, promotions like “Buy 2 Get 1 Free” tickets have motivated ticket sales through the Saturday and Sunday weekend; especially in urban centres.

Maa still has yet to peak over the weekend if the film gains further positive reviews and sales continue to build through today and tomorrow.
