Sunny Deol Praises South Cinema at ‘Jaat’ Trailer Launch, Hints at Moving South

Veteran actor Sunny Deol is gearing up for the release of his next action-packed film, Jaat, helmed by Gopichand Malineni and backed by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory. The trailer launch event on Monday saw Deol showering praise on South Indian filmmakers, emphasizing the need for Bollywood to take inspiration from them.

Speaking at the event, Deol urged Mumbai-based filmmakers to learn from their southern counterparts.

“You all call it Bollywood, but first, refer to it as Hindi cinema. And learn how to make films with love from South filmmakers. I thoroughly enjoyed working with them and told the makers, ‘Let’s do another film.’ Maybe I shall settle there (in the South),” he said.

The Gadar 2 star also highlighted the authenticity of South Indian films, saying that their ability to stay rooted makes them widely relatable across the country. Comparing them to older Bollywood classics, he mentioned his films like Ghatak, Damini, and Arjun, expressing his desire to see Hindi cinema return to such storytelling.

Addressing the current state of Bollywood, Deol pointed to increasing commercialization as a major issue. “Earlier, producers were committed to making good films after hearing a narration. Then corporates stepped in, making everything about commerce. People lost interest in filmmaking, and those with a real hunger for cinema were left behind,” he stated.

Touted as “the biggest action film in the country,” Jaat features Randeep Hooda, Saiyami Kher, and Regina Cassandra alongside Deol. With music by S. Thaman, cinematography by Rishi Punjabi, and editing by Naveen Nooli, the film marks Malineni’s Hindi cinema debut. Jaat is set to release in theatres on April 10.
